A Couple Tips

First off I'd like to say "Happy New Year" to you all!
I hope you have had a wonderful time off with your families!!

I have a couple tips I would love to share with you that I used on my newest album called "I {heart} you always". I hope these will inspire you on your next MAA project!!!

** Instead of journaling on paper I did my journaling directing on the acrylic itself!!
And how about using a white pen...it will really make that journaling pop!!


** Take advantage of shaped paper!!
This really helped me create the front and back of this particular page on my album!!

Distressing Acrylic (Embossing and Alcohol Ink)

First of all, stamp some images using embossing ink on your acrylic embellishment or pages and later heat emboss it with some embossing powders. You can absolutely use any colour of embossing powders. (Tip: try to use a colour that coordinates with your colour theme of the page.) (Caution: Not to overheat your acrylic during embossing. Try to keep a little distance between the heating tool and your acrylic. The acrylic will bend a little after heat embossing but it will return to normal when it has cooled down.)

Then, drip a few drops of alcohol ink on it and spread the ink around the embossed stamped image with a brush. You could drip some blending solution to thin the alcohol ink and ease the painting process. Then add another colour of alcohol ink on to it and also more blending solution. Try to do this until you get the colours and the effect you want. (Tip: try not to paint on top of the embossed image for more than once or twice as it will remove the embossed image from the acrylic.)

When it dries, you will get a very cool distressed acrylic piece to work with.

Stamping to create layers on Acrylic Page



This is a very simple technique. It’s actually quite similar as to how you would do on paper. Use any paper and cut out a square or rectangle in the middle. I’ve cut out a square in the picture below Then use a temporary adhesive tape to secure it onto the acrylic page. Get some stamps and some solvent ink such as Tsukineko Staz On. Start stamping randomly all over the area that is cut out from the paper.

Then, remove the template and you will have a see through layer of pattern paper on your acrylic page. You can repeat this technique on the same acrylic page to create more layers of clear pattern papers.

Applying Lace Cardstock To Acrylic

Hi everyone!  Hope you all had a fabulous Halloween!  In honor of the holiday, I'm going to use the jack-o-latern album for my technique today. 

One of my FAVORITE ways to decorate my acrylic albums is by using lace cardstock.  It really lends a pop of color, but at the same time allows me to maintain the transparency of the album. 

Supplies needed:

lace cardstock, pencil, scissors, adhesive, and an acrylic album

First gather your supplies. You'll need lace cardstock, a pencil, scissors, adhesive, and an acrylic album.

First turn the lace cardstock so the back side faces up and trace your acrylic shape with the pencil.

Remove the acrylic piece and then apply adhesive following along the entire inside the pencil line and throughout the middle of the shape. 

Adhere the acrylic shape to the lace cardstock and smooth with your hand.  Allow to dry.

Trim the excess lace cardstock from around the acrylic shape.

Flip the shape over to the right side.  (optional: apply acrylic paint to the edge of the acrylic shape and allow to dry)

Decorate as you wish!

Creating An Awesome Album With Your "Left-Overs"!


Hello there! 

Emily here...today I thought I'd share with you an album I recently made.

If
you are like me, you have leftover bits and pieces of your acrylic
albums hanging around...I always save a page or two out of my albums,
and they definitely come in handy later!

Here is the formula to making an awesome album of leftovers!

Grab
up whatever leftover acrylic pages you have on hand....I happened to
have 2 sheets of 8x8, 2 sheets of 6x6, and two 6x6 tabbed pages...I
ended up choosing the four 6x6 pages...

Also, did you know you can purchase single additional sheets of 6x6 pages in the store?

Then, to supplement extra pages, I used four 6x6 squares of patterned Overlays.  (2 of each pattern)

Once
I decided the order I wanted my pages to go, (Mine is: Acrylic,
Overlay, Acrylic, Overlay etc...) I decided on a theme.  I wanted to
make my album a travel journal documenting my trip to CHA this past
summer, so I chose travel themed papers and embellishments from
American Crafts.

I cut 6x6 squares of my travel themed paper to supplement my album as well...to bind it, I used blue binding rings I found at target...

For the journaling, I decided I wanted to give my album a very structured, more uniformed look, so I typed all my journaling and adhered it to the right side pages of the album.  Each journaling block represents a different topic in the album.

Inside my album I added ephemera and souvenirs from my trip including buttons from the show, the hotel key from my hotel room, my show badges and my plane ticket!

Here is my final result:

Combining my love of jewelry with acrylic


Throughout my life I've always been creating things. When I was younger I would paint and draw. I moved on to woodburning and jewelry making. Then I discovered scrapbooking,and all other creative hobbies were put on the back burner,so to speak. I especially miss jewelry making,and recently pulled out my gemstones and jumprings. They inspired me to make a piece using MAA's square button.

The first step was making a hole in the button for the jumpring. I have very few scrappy tools and I most certainly wasn't going to use my boyfriend's drill! I realized acrylic melts,so any heat source with a fine point would work. I grabbed my Making Memories paper piercer and a candle. I heated the tip of the piercer in the flame and then placed it on the acrylic,pressing down slightly. If the piercer is hot enough,it will melt through easily and you won't need to press very hard. The black soot on my paper piercer was easily removed and it was good as new! You can use a woodburner for this step as well.

Now it was time to apply some color,and I love alcohol inks so I reached for them! I chose stream and cranberry for my project. I applied several drops of each color onto my Ranger alcohol ink applicator and then pressed it onto my acrylic. When dry,I repeated this step on the other side.This really gives the piece a rich depth of color.

I used a skull and crossbones grungeboard shape and colored it with black Staz on. I lightly applied metallic silver Colorbox ink on it as well. I outlined the peice with a white signo and attached it to the acrylic with glue dots. I raided my jewelry stash for some garnet beads which made perfect eyes! It was then time for some bling,in the form of silver stickles. When the stickles had dried completely I attached a jumpring through the hole I had made. I gave the piece a good coat of Mod Podge,let it dry,and repeated with another coat.

There you have it,a unique necklace that's perfect for me! These would make great gifts for the upcoming holiday season,so go order some square buttons today and get started!

Tis the Season...

To start preparing for Christmas. I have been getting calls and emails from my family telling me it is time to get started shopping and creating for the holidays so I thought I would get a jump on it making some acrylic Christmas ornaments using acrylic charms from MAA.

You will need:

an embossing or watermark stamp

acrylic charm

stamp

embossing powder

heat gun

ribbon

Wet your stamp with your embossing pad and turn it facing up. It is easier to get proper placement of the image on the acrylic.

Sprinkle with embossing powder and heat with a heat gun being careful not to overheat it.

Embellish as desired. I added ribbon and embossed the edges for a cool snowy look.

And how about this for a cute little teachers gift!

Glitter & Glossy Accents

Supplies

Pencil

Exacto Knife

I used glitter and Glossy Accents (by Ranger) to decorate the ears of my acrylic Mickey Mouse Album. To start, first I used a pencil to trace the line where I planned to cut with my exacto knife.

Next, I used my exacto knife to cut along the traced line. Once I had made the cut, I peeled the paper backing off of the EAR ONLY. I kept the backing on the rest of the album to protect the acrylic.

The next thing I did was spray the acrylic with adhesive. I made sure to cover it evenly and then I sprinkled it with black glitter. I tapped off the excess glitter and then completed the above steps on the second ear. Allow both ears to dry completely.

Once both ears had dried, I covered them in Glossy Accents (by Ranger). I used a paintbrush to apply it evenly. Allow both ears to dry completely - Mine took about two hours to dry all the way. I knew they were dry when they appeared clear (it looked milky when they were still wet) and felt dry to the touch.

Lastly, I used black Stickles (also by Ranger) to line the outside of the ears. When both ears were 100% dry, I carefully peeled the backing off of the rest of the acrylic album. Now my ears are not only glittery, but they also have a shiny 3-D look to them thanks to the magic of Glossy Accents!

flat black is your friend...

I just finished up my acrylic Pumpkin album and wanted to share how I put together the cover and the last page of my album...  SUPER simple.

Supplies I used:

  • Flat Black spray paint
  • Pumpkin acrylic album cover (the orange pumpkin)
  • stencil...  i used a bit of Tim Holtz' grunge board in swirl shape
  • liquid glue (something that can be painted on with a paint brush)
  • orange glitter

For the orange cover of this album I simply placed the stencil over my pumpkin.  You may choose to use a temporary adhesive if your stencil is just a piece of paper or lighter in weight than grunge board or if it is windy outside and you are afraid your stencil will blow off.  (i did use a xyron machine to apply temporary adhesive to my stencil, but found later I didn't really need to)  I put my pumpkin cover in a large box and spray painted on an even coat of flat black.  I put at least two coats.  I also added into the box some chipboard elements like a tree and little skulls... might as well give them a coat of flat black too ;-)

After you're items are dry, carefully peel off your stencil to reveal the orange color of the album cover.  Then i took some liquid glue and painted glue into the orange swirl that was left on my pumpkin cover.  And (you guessed it) added orange glitter.  AND that was it for the cover!!! Simple, right??? 

I added black glitter (with a hint of red glitter mixed in) to the little tree i spray painted as well and used that inside my album.

For the back page I used the same stencil/spray paint technique with a large skull and crossbones stencil.

Stained Glass Windows With Acrylic

Supplies list:

Acrylic album or sheet from My Acrylic Album

Gallery glass liquid leading or ready lead

Gallery glass colors – glass paint

Gallery Glass Beads

Scissors

Stained glass design or any pattern that is easily traced

Toothpick for popping and air bubbles

 

Place pattern under acrylic and begin outlining   pattern with liquid leading or ready lead.  Ready lead will allow you to start working on filling the color with the glass paint immediately.  If you use liquid leading you will need to let it dry overnight before adding the glass paint. 

For the 3-d butterfly you will need a thick piece of packaging plastic.  Repeat the previous steps to create the butterfly image.  Let it completely dry. 

When the liquid leading is dry or you have finished outlining pattern with ready lead, apply colored glass paint to acrylic. I like using the clear color for the outside of the pattern.   It will look like this when it's wet. You can add glass beads to sun catcher while the paint is wet. Optional.

Let dry overnight. 

It will look like this dry.Cut out the extra butterfly that you made on the packaging plastic.

When the butterfly is cut out, carefully bend the butterfly in half adhere to center on top of butterfly on sun catcher with a 3-d glue dot.

After adhering the butterfly to sun catcher use your Crop-a-dile or a small craft drill to drill holes in top corners of acrylic shape.  Add eyelet to each punched hole. 

Thread ribbon through the eyelets and tie a knot in each end to secure.

Decorate with embellishments. Hang in the window and enjoy!!!

If you have never used Gallery Glass you can get more directions on this technique from the books available or their website.  Gallery Glass is a Plaid product and can be purchased at many craft stores.  These sun catchers make great gifts!!!

Stencilling on Acrylic

For this technique you will need the following:

1. an acrylic piece (or album)

2. a item to trace or stencil around

3. a sharp tracing tool

Place the item that you wish to trace ontop of your piece of acrylic. If the piece is large, you may want to use glue dots to keep it in place. Keep the protective paper on the acrylic.

Using the sharp tool, trace around the shape with slow, steady pressure.
